Back to Work

The grass needed mowed.  The weeds needed pulled.  The crops needed mulched.  We got most of all three done.  I  am consistently amazed at how fast things seem to grow.  We have peas now when we didn’t have three days ago.  Three different breeds even.  No clue to what any of them are though.  Tomatoes are starting to show.  At last count we had near 30 that ranged in size from a pea to an egg.  We harvested the broccoli.  Radishes are looking great.  We just have to thin the herd every now and then.  I even seen about a dozen decent sized strawberries.  If only they would ripen.  There are baby cucumbers now.  D is a proud father.  He really hopes they grow up to become pickles.

“stuff” happens

After deciding that we needed a taller ladder for our peas we hit the farm store again.  We purchased three t-posts to tie more string on for the peas to grow taller.  We bought a roll of chicken wire for the cucumbers and a soil test kit just to see what we might need to add to the soil.  Unfortunately we also walked out with a box of that “stuff” that is supposed to grow miracle’s.   (more…)

A Huge Sunday

We just had a huge day at City Farm.  Not feeling like jumping in feet first Derrick and I decided to go to the local farm store.  I had a few ideas bouncing around in my head about what to buy.  We purchased a ten foot garden hose so that we could move the reel into the garden fence, and a two foot piece of inch diameter hose to connect the rain barrels.  The big buy though was a propane torch.  We intended to use it to clean around the chain link fence and also try to finally get rid of some very belligerent mulberry bushes.   (more…)

It has to stop raining one of these days

latest1month.jpegMay isn’t even halfway over and we have had eight inches of rain by some accounts.  Starting to grow restless we built some tomato cages.  The cages are built out of metal fence.  The fence was traded to CFP for some future tomato’s.  They are about 18 inches across and four feet tall.  They have nice big squares where one can reach in and retrieve a tomato.  We made a total 22 tomato cages and if the rain ever lets up we might put them over the tomato’s we planted a week ago.
